Carpet Lifespan: How to Extend It

We all want our homes to look beautiful, but we don’t want to be constantly replacing all of the fixtures and fittings. That would get very costly, very quickly. If you have carpets, you’ll know that they have a big impact upon the look and feel of the interior of your home, but they are notoriously prone to wear, and if you’re not careful after a few short years can look pretty run down.

Rather than having to replace them every 5-10 years – out with the old, in with the new – wouldn’t it be better to try and extend the lifespan of the carpets you already have?! As one of the leading carpet cleaning companies in Arvada and the surrounding area, it’s literally our business to try and make sure your carpets last longer. But in addition to professional cleanings, there are lots of things you can do on a day-to-day basis that will help your carpets to hang onto their good looks for as long as possible.

What You Can Do to Help Your Carpets Last Longer

Much of the advice we’re going to share below is ever so simple, but often overlooked. The most important thing with carpet care is to be consistent. Never forget that.

Regular Dates with the Vacuum Cleaner

Too often homeowners buy a vacuum cleaner with the best intentions in the world, only to pull it out once in a blue moon. Remember what I just said – you need to be consistent.

Making sure that you vacuum your carpets at least twice per week will ensure that dirt, grime and bacteria is not able to build up on your carpet fibers. That kind of buildup seriously shortens the life expectancy of any carpet. Can you imagine not washing your skin for weeks on end and allowing the dirt to just accumulate?! No good will come of it.

Shoes are the Enemy

I have to admit that I found it oh so difficult to get into the habit of not wearing my shoes in the house. But then I realized just how disgusting it really is. You’re walking around outside, treading in all manner of things during the day, and then you’re bringing that into your home if you don’t take your shoes off at the door. Madness!

If you want your carpets to last longer, you must take your shoes off when you arrive home. I beg you to! Probably 90% (or more) of all of the dirt that makes its way into your home, does so via shoes. So removing them at the door is a very, very quick way to eliminate the majority of dirt that may come into contact with your carpets and cause them to deteriorate quicker.

Consider Periodically Rearranging Your Furniture

This might sound a little strange at first, but let me explain myself. One of the ways in which carpets get worn is simply by walking on them. After thousands and thousands of times passing over the surface of the carpet, even if you’re not wearing shoes, it’s normal that the carpet fibers will show this kind of wear.

But what makes this wear more noticeable is when it is concentrated in the same areas. This happens when you maintain the furniture in the exact same place for a long time, as the path you take when walking through the room will always be the same. This is why we’d recommend you occasionally change the layout of your room, as this will spread the wear over the entire surface of the carpet, rather than concentrate it in specific spots, allowing you to squeeze a few more years out of it.

Don’t Wait to Clean Up Spills

In an ideal world, you’d never spill anything on your carpets. But we don’t live in an ideal world. Food gets spilled on them and drinks get knocked over. That’s life! What’s important is what you do when this happens. If you think “I’ll sort that out later” and then later happens to be tomorrow or next week, you’re not doing your carpet (or yourself) any favors. The longer you wait, the harder it is to remove and the more damage it does to your carpets.

As soon as you spill something, clean it up. In the long run, this will really benefit your carpet.

Periodically Apply Stain Protector

Many modern carpets come with a stain protector like Scotchguard already applied when installed, but over time this protection is diminished and should be reapplied. The perfect time to do so is just after a professional carpet cleaning, when your carpet fibers are as clean as possible.

Having such a protection applied will lessen the impact of spills and stains, and make them easier to clean up.
